Friday, March 21, Brussels my abstract: What is fair? Responsibility and solidarity in health care Abstract: An insurance is purchased in order to cover oneself when taking a risk. In the case of health insurance, the risk taking behavior is the living itself. Health insurance is therefore “thought to protect against medically undesirable consequences of unavoidable hazards, either those presented by nature or those imposed by the toxic environment”. ( Wikler, 1987, p. 19 ) From this ‘luck-egalitarian approach’ most people are prepared to be solidary with the unavoidable, less solidary with the avoidable. Recent polls on our attitude towards non-communicable diseases healthcare suggest that we have become less solidary with people struggling with ‘avoidable diseases’. Often, their criterion is the avoidability of the disease and the responsibility of the individual, but what exactly is our criterion for judging whether an individual has done enough to protect his health? Een trooster ‘De mensen zijn goudvissen, ze herinneren zich alleen het allerlaatste.” Troosten, het is niet iedereen gegeven. Bepaalde mensen kunnen het: ze zitten naast iemand, spreken een woord, geven een hand of hoeven maar te kijken, en ze troosten. Anderen slagen er nooit in; alle verwoede pogingen en goede bedoelingen ten spijt, het lukt hen niet. Op zich hoeft dat geen probleem zijn. We hoeven niet allemaal alles te kunnen, zolang we maar weten waar we aan toe zijn in de omgang met anderen. Dat helpt, het kan zelfs een troostende gedachte zijn. De moeilijkheden ontstaan wanneer we denken iets te kunnen terwijl het niet zo is. Dan beelden we ons iets in. We verbeelden onze identiteit door onszelf wijs te maken dat we tot vele grootse zaken in staat zijn, maar doordat dit succes zich alleen in ons hoofd – het imaginaire – afspeelt, wordt de relatie met de gewone wereld een lastige aangelegenheid. Dan kost het veel psychische arbeid – van verdringing en sublimati
